Mental Lab for Mental Power

MELA — Mental Lab. The head is part of performance. We will measure it and train it.

In the coming months we will build MELA, dedicated to the mental side of performance. MELA will do two things: objectively measure the athlete’s mental state and train it with targeted exercises.

On the left the heart sensor’s trace, on the right the headband’s: the two signals MELA will read.

The MELA method

  1. Profiling

The system will identify the person’s goal: sports performance, with the relevant discipline, or mental wellbeing.

  2. Goal-specific aptitude tests

For each goal MELA will measure the mental aptitudes that goal requires: every discipline asks different things of the mind.

  3. Personalised path with artificial intelligence

From the strengths and weaknesses that will emerge in the tests, the system will build a stage-by-stage training path and adjust it on its own according to the results the person achieves.

  4. Continuous monitoring of mind and body

Brain activity, which will be read with an EEG headband, and heart activity (heart-rate variability and recovery times) will measure mental and physical stress. For athletes, surface electromyography will make it possible to tell mental fatigue from muscular fatigue. Every stage of the path will be verified on objective data.

How it will work

Performance

Precision, speed, consistency and errors in responses.

Heart

Heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV) and ECG.

Mind

Levels of concentration and calm that the headband will read.

The method in detail

How MELA will measure, how it will train and how it will adapt to each discipline.

Next developments

The method and the platform will be the base on which we will extend MELA to the emotional dimension of performance and wellbeing. At a later stage we will apply the same measurement tools and the same adaptive-path model to these areas, with dedicated protocols that we will develop together with qualified professionals.

  • Self-esteem
  • Fear of judgement
  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of success
